Housed at the heart of one of the largest fashion mall in Pesaro, T-Island was conceived by OPENSYSTEMS to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the International fast-fashion brand Terranova.

Pesaro is a city and comune in the Italian region of Marche, capital of the Province of Pesaro e Urbino, on the Adriatic Sea.

The project marked a very important step in OPENSYSTEMS’ practice as they confronted themselves with a very open brief and had to deal with a large organisation as a client.

The concept challenges the traditional retail environment introducing a moment of leisure. T-Island is a hybrid space , a place to break from the hustle and bustle of shopping and experience first-hand the brand’s laid back ethos.

The space is, at the same time, a workplace, a lounge area and a playground. Customers can discover, relax, experience the brand and its values through interaction and play while shopping.

The design of the space fully embraces the brand’s joyful and playful way of life and takes inspiration from the Adriatic easy-going way of life and the local club scene.

In contrast with the straight lines of the surrounding store, T-Island applies the principle of space-filling curves and circles as a way to organize several activities within a constrained area of the store.

A ribbon curtain subdivides and unfolds the space by following curvilinear geometries. While the main store is neutral in color and with a limited material palette, T-Island employs a palette of saturated hues and matter.

According to the authors, the challenge consisted in accommodating both customers and staff within a limited plot while providing a coherent design. For this reason they implemented a parametric process where the activities were represented by a series of concentric circles with varying diameter depending on the required footage.

It takes advantage from the unique and loose program to provide a free flowing sequence of spaces that visually and spatially engage the senses.

Through the use of color, materials and textures.

At the centre of the space, a mesmerising fish tank-meeting room made out of dycroic glass panels hosts the staff training activities as well as special events.

The glass produces manifold reflections of the neon lights set within and around it.

The rest of the area offers a charging station for mobiles and tablets, a corner to shoot selfies, a vending machine for food and refreshments, a foosball table and a lounge for video projection. A bespoke set of modular furniture punctuate the space and can move and be rotated at will.

This information-rich environment lets the eyes travel through the space continuously finding new stimuli in the interplay of colors, lights, reflections and projections.
