Unveiled Affinities: Quaderns in Europe
by Bajet Giramé and Pablo Garrido

Unveiled Affinities: Quaderns in Europe unveils previously unrecorded ties between pages of the magazine Quaderns d’Arquitectura i Urbanisme from the 80s and the current architectural works of its former readers, some of whom were still students back then and are now renowned architects from all across Europe.

The exhibition features a cohort of 16 prestigious architects providing a threefold contribution: a selection of pages from Quaderns that left a mark when they were first read, a later example of their own architecture that was influenced by such pages, and,  through a brief interview, the story of the associated ties and memories.

This way, the invited architects act as curators for a selection of Quaderns pages, which the exhibition overlays with their current architectures and words.

On the occasion of the opening, the exhibition hosted a debate between Cino Zucchi and Christoph Gantenbein, with interventions by Josep Lluís Mateo, and Marta Cervelló. In the closing event, Jan de Vylder and Philip Christou explained the influences of the magazine on their architecture.

16 supports, one for each participant, gathers a personal carousel of Quaderns pages, interview fragments and own work. The exhibition design is conceived as the spatial overlay of original sketches in tracing paper, pulled up pages from the magazine, unpublished pictures, interview portions, 35mm slides or constructional details.

Each participant’s fragments are exhibited in-between two plexiglass layers, forming a 1.5m x 1.5m hung transparent canvas, exposed two-sided. One side contains Quaderns selected pages and anecdotes, while the other, gathers the participant’s own architectural work.

Transparencies and overlays between both plexiglass sides interweaves crossed references, dialogues and unexpected architectures.

The exhibition support is economic, light, easy to pile and transport for the exhibition itinerancy, and solves all the structural elements of the exhibition with three variations: participating panels, introductory panels and table, which contains several magazine issues and the participants interviews’ full length.
