From Diverse Landscapes to Shared Horizons

Atzur Arquitectura is an architecture practice based in Barcelona and Ibiza, founded by Claudia Ferrer Riera and Milagros Machado in 2021. The work of Atzur is focused in developing projects from a feminist and Mediterranean perspective. From diverse backgrounds and distinct architectural traditions, Milagros and Claudia’s collaboration began in Barcelona, evolving from a shared passion for design into a thriving practice. Rooted in the Mediterranean, their work honors the natural harmony of the landscape, blending sustainability with local tradition. Inspired by various creative fields, they explore new perspectives to enrich their designs. Recently, they won the Europan competition, marking a milestone in their journey to create inclusive, responsible architecture.

Where paths cross

We come from diverse academic backgrounds and geographical contexts, yet we share a common foundation. Milagros studied architecture at the Faculty of Architecture, Design, and Urbanism (FADU-UBA) in Buenos Aires, while Claudia pursued her studies at the Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB). During her studies, Claudia spent a year in Buenos Aires, and Milagros later completed a master’s degree in sustainability in Barcelona. In this way, both of us have, at different times, been students at the same institutions. Our paths crossed in Barcelona while working at Mano Arquitectura, where we quickly discovered the genuine pleasure of working together. We realised that collaboration allowed us to develop ideas more deeply and encouraged us to explore new possibilities. After two years at the studio, a close friend of Claudia’s asked her to refurbish his house in the heart of Ibiza. The project felt like a dream come true, and we naturally began to take it on together. That collaboration planted the seed for our shared professional journey. What began as a bold experiment has gradually evolved into a thriving reality. Today, we are working on several projects and looking forward to the exciting opportunities ahead.

Groundwork and inspiration

While our practice may not follow a single defined method, we do share a distinctive approach to initiating projects. Each process begins with a careful exploration of the site and its context—whether it involves an existing structure or a new location. We believe that understanding the environment, history, and surrounding community is essential to creating meaningful architecture. At the same time, we adopt a broader lens. We explore the themes and ideas a project evokes, often engaging in conversations that extend beyond architecture—discussing films, poems, books, photography, and other references. This makes the early phase of a project especially engaging. Even when these ideas aren’t directly architectural, they help add depth and nuance to the process. Our aim is to translate these reflections into concrete architectural responses. We’re also aware that many architects have explored similar topics, so we make it a point to study their work to see how they addressed similar concerns, which we share as well.

A dialogue of origins

In the early years of our careers, frequent travels between Ibiza and Barcelona played a significant role in shaping our design philosophy. The aerial view of the Mediterranean Sea became more than a routine commute—it served as a constant reminder of our roots in different architectural traditions.

Milagros comes from Buenos Aires, where the architecture is characterised by different proportions and diverse materials. The wild vegetation of her hometown creates a powerful dialogue between nature and the built environment. In contrast, Claudia grew up in Ibiza, where the Mediterranean landscape feels more human-scaled and intimately connected to daily life. Though we share many sensibilities and intuitions, our distinct backgrounds often lead to differing perspectives—something we see as a strength.

This exchange enriches our process, allowing us to explore a wider range of ideas that draw from both individual experience and collaborative energy. It is this dynamic that continues to shape our practice, reminding us that diversity of origin can foster more innovative design.

Echoes of the island

Much of our practice is rooted in Ibiza, a Mediterranean island known for its architecture rich in identity and tradition. Local building methods have long embraced the relationship between landscape and inhabitants. Our aim is to create spaces that honour this natural harmony—ensuring that our interventions enhance, rather than disturb, the existing balance. This involves studying traditional construction techniques and developing a sensitive engagement with the surrounding environment.

We also carry out part of our work in Barcelona, where Milagros lives and where we maintain an office. This connection to a vibrant, cosmopolitan city brings fresh perspectives to our projects. Barcelona’s deep architectural and urban legacy continues to inspire us, offering a wealth of references that inform and enrich our design approach.

Opportunities for change

Like many of our generation, we are deeply concerned about the future. We understand that every design decision has an environmental impact, which is why we strive to create architecture that is both responsible and regenerative. We prioritise the use of sustainable materials—those that are locally sourced, traditionally used, or can be reused in the future.

At the same time, we recognise that architecture is not always accessible to everyone. This is why we often take part in competitions that promote public spaces and affordable housing. We believe that everyone deserves to live in a healthy, well-designed environment. However, it can be challenging for a young studio like ours to participate in such competitions, as the entry requirements are often quite demanding. That said, Europan has offered us a valuable opportunity.

We recently won a competition for a social housing project in Ibiza, in collaboration with Ventura Godoy and Javier Esteve. We’re excited to see this project take shape and contribute to more inclusive and sustainable architecture.

A fusion of perspectives

Winning the Europan competition has given us the chance to collaborate with another team, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds. This experience has profoundly enriched our practice and expanded our perspectives.

We are also active participants in architecture conferences organised by the Colegio de Arquitectos de Ibiza y Formentera. These events provide invaluable opportunities to learn about different studios, their workflows, and to stay connected with other professionals in the field.

Beyond architecture, we believe inspiration can come from many sources. Both of us share a deep passion for dance and music, and we are currently taking flamenco classes. The complexity and artistry of flamenco captivate us, and its expressive movements often influence and inspire our projects.
